Over the next year, I am asking every governor in this country, Democrat and Republican, for three things.

And if the people determine that there’s nothing to do, then there’s nothing to do. But if the people determine that we move, we move.

We need to change the status quo in all of the best ways.

At a time of deep division, I firmly believe that service will save us.

What we have seen from the federal government thus far has just been simply executive orders that have told the states to stay out of it.

Service teaches us that you and the person beside you are the partners in working towards a common goal.

Party bosses shouldn't be determining who members of the party are.

Voters don’t vote for a convicted felon unless they’re really frustrated with the way things are.

And I’m proud to say that in Maryland, we became the first state in the country that offers a paid-year service to our high school graduates because every young person in our state deserves a chance to serve.

At a time when I know that politics can feel like a game, at a time when we know that politics, for a lot of people in our society, politics just feels like a game that a select few can win, and everyone else is going to lose.

Our long-term goal is to reach 1 million Americans serving each year within the next decade, and with the leadership and the help of this organization and our nation’s remarkable governors, we are going to get this done.
