I want to focus our attention on the bankruptcy bill itself. I hope we can make some progress on that this afternoon or tonight and that we will go forward with the substance. I understand Senator Grassley and Senator Durbin will be coming over to, in effect, do their opening statements which they didn't really get to do last Thursday night. We will let them begin the bankruptcy bill while we see if we can work something out. It is my hope that we can work out an agreement, and we can vitiate that cloture vote tomorrow. But we do need to get something worked out so we won't have to go to cloture, because I think if we do have another cloture vote and it doesn't prevail, we really have to go on.

I was always a conservative Republican and I had very strong beliefs about certain things we should or should not do. But also thought that I was sent to Washington by the people of my state not to make a statement but to make a difference…
When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We`re proud of him. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn`t have had all these problems over all these years either.
We are going to start doing things a little differently. We are going to go back and do some of the things that worked.
When you're dealing with 100 United States senators, let alone 435 House members, you're not going to get it all the way you want it. The president's going to have to give some, the president is going to have to show leadership.
