Trent Lott: “I again thank Senator Hatch for the effort. I remember even last year at one point I think we had approximately 70…”

I again thank Senator Hatch for the effort. I remember even last year at one point I think we had approximately 70 judges on the calendar, a large number, and there was disagreement about how to proceed. There was an indication we would have to have a recorded vote on every one of them, even though many of them could be moved on a voice vote with no problem. It looked like we were not going to be able to move them, but Senator Daschle and I kept talking about them and kept working on it, and we began to move them in blocks. We finished the process and we had moved, I think, almost all of them, if not all of them. That was an example of how there can be cooperation in this very important area of confirmation of judges.

First of all, there's going to be an election and the numbers will be different come this fall. And you're going to need leadership from the President and from the leaders in the Congress.
