We have a responsibility for the future of these children, which means their education, and we have a responsibility to protect them from job exploitation.
Tom Lantos
The Public Record
Tom Lantos was a prominent American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from California's 12th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, Lantos was known for his strong advocacy on human rights issues and played a significant role in foreign policy matters during his tenure. He was the only Holocaust survivor to have served in Congress, which deeply influenced his commitment to human rights and humanitarian causes. Lantos served in Congress from 1981 until his retirement in 2008, when he chose not to seek re-election due to health issues. His legacy includes efforts to address global human rights abuses and to promote democracy around the world.
As a result of this article which appeared in Seventeen Magazine, young people around our Nation have written to me during passage of legislation to deal with these problems.
This racial hatred, which was given its defining violent moment in Kristallnacht, led directly to the 'Final Solution,' the fanatic Nazi drive to annihilate the Jewish race.
It is my hope that other newly democratic nations in Central and Eastern Europe will follow the example of the Sakic trial.
I would like to invite my colleagues to join me in commending the Croatian Government's vigorous prosecution of Dinko Sakic, the commander of the notorious Jasenovac concentration camp during World War II and one of the worst war criminals…
The Croatian Government's timely and public efforts to hold Dinko Sakic accountable for his crimes merit the appreciation of all who care about international justice and human rights.
It is imperative that Croatia's leaders continue to confront the country's World War II past as they have done so effectively with the prosecution of Dinko Sakic.
I invite my colleagues to join me today in paying tribute to Charles F.C. Ruff, who left his position as White House Counsel earlier this summer.
Ruff was widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress as a lawyer who doggedly defended his client but didn't engage in personal attacks or media ploys.
His exemplary record merits the commendation and thanks of all Americans who admire his commitment to justice and public service.
The job of Counsel to the President requires an individual with a rare combination of intelligence, judgement, knowledge, experience, stature and legal skill. That is a perfect description of Charles Ruff.
