This resolution is not and cannot be construed to be an authorization for the use of force against Iran. It calls upon all of the state parties to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to take all appropriate measures to deter, dissuade, and prevent Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons, including economic sanctions and international pressure. The international sanctions on Libya were ultimately successful in convincing Colonel Qaddafi to give up all of his programs to develop weapons of mass destruction. This is the model that the world community needs to pursue with Iraq.
