I am just exploring that because I do not want to embarrass her, and when I get home, she is going to be embarrassed. She has been going to a series of bat mitzvahs in the Washington area these last 3 or 4 weeks where they give gifts to the young women who come to celebrate the event with them. What am I supposed to do, tell her to take it back? Under the amendment of the Senator from Arkansas, I should tell her she cannot have it at all, and under the Levin amendment, I have to ask her what it is worth; is that right?

More from Ted Stevens
The NALEMP annual appropriation was first drafted in 1993 by Senator Ted Stevens and Senator Daniel Inouye.
[I]n 1995, 60 factory trawlers discarded nearly as much fish in the Bering Sea as was kept in the New England lobster fishery, the Atlantic mackerel fishery, the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery, the Pacific sablefish fishery, and the North…
[t]he waste in that area was as great as the total catch of all the major fisheries off our shores. These 60 factory trawlers threw overboard--dead and unused--about one out of every four fish they caught.
They are not numbers. They were people, living, breathing, caring, loving people. And they're not anymore. And there is no rational explanation as to why not.
