I am pleased to rise today, on behalf of myself and Senator Inhofe, to introduce, at the request of the administration, legislation to further the development at Yucca Mountain of the national repository for nuclear spent fuel and defense nuclear waste. This bill is a good start on the road to enactment of legislation that will resolve issues critical to the construction, licensing and operation of the facility. I hope to begin hearings on this issue in the Energy and Natural Resources Committee shortly after the conclusion of the upcoming recess. I look forward to working with the administration, Senator Inhofe, and other interested Senators to facilitate the construction and operation of the repository, a project so important to the continued development of safe, clean, and efficient nuclear power in this country.
