I appreciate hearing the concerns of my friends from New York. I can understand their wanting to see this site cleaned-up as quickly and efficiently as possible. I can also understand the concerns of the citizens of Tonawanda--they will only be pleased with the total removal of this 350,000 cubic yards of radioactive waste. Finally, I can understand the funding constraints of the FUSRAP program within the Department of Energy that can make decisions like these very difficult. Nevertheless, I believe that the Senators from the State of New York have a right to find out what analyses the Department of Energy possesses that indicate that removal, transportation and off-site storage appear unacceptable to the Department.
