Paul S. Sarbanes is a former U.S. Senator from Maryland, serving from 1977 to 2007. A member of the Democratic Party, Sarbanes was known for his work on financial regulation and consumer protection. Thank you very much, Senator Johnson. First, I want to commend Senator Johnson for holding this hearing on what I consider to be a very important topic of capital investment in Indian Country.
We want to address this problem. And Senator Johnson's initiative in launching these hearings is extremely important in trying to accomplish that objective.
It is important that we address, as Senator Johnson is doing with this hearing, the situation on Indian Lands.
One of the top priorities of this Committee under my leadership has been the challenge of bringing all Americans into the financial mainstream.
I think we have to simplify this so that we have a better feel for what the ramifications or consequences are...
Let me just say this just as observation. I have not discussed this with my colleagues.
Now we want to get health insurance to unemployed people, but I do not think we want to do it at the expense of taking it away from children.
