I stand on many shoulders as the first -- the first black mayor and the first woman mayor, and I wanted to pay homage to those who have come before me.

We have a lot of work to do when it comes to combating structural racism in our city.

My life’s work from education advocacy to leading the city council has been centered around making sure every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed in a more just city than the one I grew up in.

I never even imagined I would see a black mayor in my lifetime in the city of Boston.
