I had hoped that the budget that was presented before the Committee last week was going to be fiscally responsible. Unfortunately, I was not able to support this budget in Committee and I will not be able to support it here on the Senate floor. This budget does not take seriously the out-of-control entitlement spending looming on the horizon. This budget resolution fails to show that Congress is willing to make the difficult choices necessary to ensure that the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs will continue into the future. This country faces $67 trillion in unfunded liabilities over the next 75 years. Thirty two trillion dollars of that is in the Medicare program, $20 trillion is in the Medicaid program and the remaining $15 trillion is in the Social Security program and other liabilities. How are our children supposed to pay for that? We don't have to wait 75 years for the problem to blow up in our faces.
