Evan Bayh: “I must say to my friend that it is a concern that I share. I did not come easily to the conclusion that we have…”

On the recordOctober 8, 2002
I must say to my friend that it is a concern that I share. I did not come easily to the conclusion that we have collectively reached. There is reluctance in my heart, as I know there is in the other Senators', to contemplate the use of force. But I reached the conclusion that we were simply left with no other credible alternative to protect the safety and well-being of the American people. I hope beyond anything else that this does not come to war; that the use of force will not be necessary. But I also believe that the best chance to achieve that outcome is the credible threat of the use of force. Saddam Hussein responds to nothing else.

There's something fundamentally wrong about that. If we can pursue our Nation's security without putting them or us as a country institutionalizing hypocrisy, I think America is stronger, we are a more just and secure country.

This is outrageous. How can this possibly happen?

I believe is discriminatory. Times have changed since then and it seems to me we should respond to those changes, changes in the attitude of our people, the acceptance of gay and lesbian people in the workplace.
