this Member is pleased that the fiscal year 1998 Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Act conference report contains several provisions regarding important rural health programs which benefit rural communities across the nation, as well as continued funding for the Ellender Fellowships. In addition, this Member would like to commend the distinguished gentleman from Louisiana [Mr. Livingston], the Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, the distinguished gentleman from Wisconsin [Mr. Obey], the ranking member of both the full Committee and the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and the distinguished gentleman from Illinois (Mr. Porter), the Chairman of the Subcommittee, for their work on these important issues. Regarding rural health funding, this Member would like to specifically mention two programs which this Member strongly supports and has expressed this support together with other members of the House Rural Health Care Coalition to the Subcommittee. These programs are Rural Outreach Grants, and the National Health Service Corps. This conference report includes $32.6 million for Rural Outreach Grants, which is an increase of $4.8 million above the fiscal year 1997 level and $7.6 million above the amount requested by the President.
