In my district, the First Congressional District of Michigan, the northern half, actually the earned income tax credit, when we passed the deficit reduction bill in 1993, over 3,200 families in my district benefited from an expansion of the earned income tax credit. The median income, median family income, in my district is only $27,482. That is the median income. These are the folks, if you had a husband and wife and two children, they would be entitled to an earned income tax credit at that median income. It is quite large in my district. Like I said, over 3,200 families could take advantage of it. So what the Republican proposal said is if you are getting the earned income tax credit, you are not allowed to take the $500-per-child tax credit that is offered.
