America's teachers are not only making democracy work, they are helping it to flourish and to triumph, and they deserve our gratitude.

So we are here today to honor a woman who makes democracy work.

I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, acting under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes, including Section 201(a) (2) of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, do proclaim that

She has taken nature and beauty by one hand, and boys and girls by the other, and she has made them dance together in a happy circle of understanding and respect.

We can declare a new day for older Americans.

I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the month of May 1966 as Senior Citizens Month.

I call upon all Federal, State and local governments, in partnership with private and voluntary organizations, to join in community effort to give meaning to the theme of this special month: A NEW DAY FOR THE OLDER AMERICAN.

A basic goal of an enlightened society must be to provide opportunities which enable older people to keep and strengthen their independence and dignity.

Let us make this month memorable by the dedicated efforts of each citizen to provide those benefits and opportunities within community programs which will add satisfaction and dignity to the lives of aging Americans.

This review demonstrates that freeways, which the District must have, can and will be located and constructed in ways that reflect all significant community needs and values.

Programs proposed by this Administration and enacted into law by the 89th Congress are being launched and expanded in the largest effort on behalf of the aging in our history.

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do, in conformity with that Act, hereby invite the several States of the Union and appropriate foreign countries to take part in Interama.

I want to play my part in it.

I think that they are entitled to more consideration in Government employment than they have received.

I would like to have a million and a half children who have no school lunch at all to have a school lunch before a rich man's child gets milk at a subsidy.
