“That is what this chart is showing. This is showing our total debt as of right now. This is the amount they borrowed per person, $19,100 for every man, woman and child in America, which has been borrowed basically over the last 15 years. The kicker on this chart is really the bottom line. The bottom line is our family of four today has to pay $440 a month just to pay the interest on the Federal debt. It is not for any goods or services, not for Medicare, Medicaid, or any of the rest. The family of four today has to pay $440 a month just to pay interest on the Federal debt. I always like to reduce it down to what the actual impact is on my friends and our constituents across our districts, and that really is what it translates into. A lot of times they say, ``I don't pay that much in taxes.'' I would like to remind, every time we walk in the store and buy a loaf of bread, that store owner makes a small profit on the loaf of bread bought in the store. When the store owner makes a small profit on it, some of that profit comes in here to the Federal Government in the form of taxes. When it is all added up, they are paying, in fact, paying that $440 a month.”
