That is what is so incredible about the party that they are holding in the White House tonight to celebrate the tax increase. For goodness sakes, if we look at what has happened, the red shows how fast spending was going up before we got here. The reason they raised taxes in 1993 was to pay for this spending increase. This is how fast spending is going up now with the new Congress since 1995. Notice there is a 40 percent decrease in the growth of Washington spending. It is this difference between here and here that has gotten spending under control and gotten us to a point where we have actually spent less money in the last 12 months than in our checkbook. Every time I say that I acknowledge the Social Security problem. It is the old Washington definition. I sincerely hope that our class is successful in moving this city forward to defining a balanced budget as something that we would accept in Wisconsin or Minnesota.
