I so strongly concur with the statement of the senior Senator from Illinois, the deputy majority leader. It is similar to statements he has made not only here but in private and in public. He has been one of Mr. Adegbile's strongest supporters throughout this matter. Both he and I know this nominee well. We know he is qualified to be the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice. More than that, we know Debo Patrick Adegbile as a real person and not as the caricature we have heard from some on the other side. I think all of us have a responsibility to vote yes or no on any issue, and at least to deal with the facts as they are, not with distortions like some of the ones we have heard about this wonderful person. The Civil Rights Division was created in 1957 in the wake of the landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, and is charged with enforcing Federal laws prohibiting discrimination, and upholding the civil and constitutional rights of the most vulnerable members of our society. From protecting voting rights to combating human trafficking to protecting against religious or racial discrimination, we all know that more work needs to be done. The Civil Rights Division plays a pivotal role in protecting the civil rights of all Americans. Debo is a man of the highest character and the utmost integrity. He is the kind of proven leader we need at the Civil Rights Division. He is a superb lawyer, to begin with.…
