Madam President, over the past weekend, I was happy to hear from my neighboring State of New Hampshire that Senator Ayotte pledged her support to this bipartisan legislation. I know how much I appreciated working with her and Senator Shaheen earlier this year to get the Leahy-Crapo Violence Against Women Act reauthorized. Senator Ayotte, of course, was an important leader in her caucus on that bipartisan bill. I hope and expect she will be on the bipartisan immigration bill as well, especially since it also contains several protections for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Just this morning the President of the United States spoke to all of us in this country, to all of America, about the need for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. He called our commonsense bipartisan bill the best chance we have had in years to fix the broken immigration system. He urged us to do the right thing and do it now. He was joined by a cross-section of distinguished Americans, Democrats and Republicans alike, from DREAMers to former President Bush administration officials to business leaders and law enforcement representatives and clergy and laymen. It was interesting to see the coalition that oftentimes will not stand together on an issue or be opposed to each other standing together in unity on this issue.…
