This is a chance for people to decide whether they stand for patients or whether they stand for the profiteering of health insurance monopolies, whether they stand for competition or for collusion. This is a victory for common sense in the midst of the health care reform debate. Only inside the beltway would those people argue that the best way to protect competition is to protect monopolies. Only inside the beltway would people try to argue that the best way to help the little guy is to make sure that we protect monopolies. The status quo is not working for the small insurers. There are those with very good intentions who want to talk about safe harbors, but I have not had constituents come up to me and say, Congress, please have more carve-outs. Congress, please have more exemptions and exceptions, please make the bills even longer. Here we have a two-page bill, 24 lines long--one that is supported by conservatives and liberals alike in my district--that makes a simple rule that health insurance companies should have to play by the same rules as everyone else.
