“I do not dispute what my distinguished colleague from Alaska said. When I made reference to the need to recognize that there is an entirely added class of individuals that is suffering as a consequence of this shutdown, they are not Federal employees. It is the infrastructure in the greater Metropolitan Washington area, primarily Virginia, of persons being affected by this shutdown and losing in the same manner as others, and there is no restitution in sight for them. ... Again, I strongly believe that we have to cool the rhetoric in Congress and, as I said earlier, do the best we can to give support to our leadership on this side of the aisle and that side of the aisle, to work with the President to resolve this thing.”
