“I say to my good friend, so we will all know, our beloved colleague, and former majority leader, Robert Dole, who has an extraordinary record of heroism in World War II, was, indeed, instrumental in the building of this memorial; that is, raising the funds and putting the infrastructure in place financially for this memorial to go through. There are some hundred thousand dollars that have been raised--almost all of it in the private sector. I was pleased, as a member of the Armed Services Committee, to bring to the Senate an amendment of some $6 million of taxpayers funds which was incorporated into last year's authorization bill and appropriated to add to the many hundreds of thousands of gifts contributed towards the building of this memorial so as to raise the final total to the $100 million to allow construction to go forward.
