You must put one foot in the system and one foot outside. We must fight for change. We cannot adjust to the party; we must change the party. Got that right to vote, 18 years ago after much bloodshed and – and death, and yet 18 years later…

This bill is not a serious attempt to address crime; it is a regressive, discriminatory, and counterproductive piece of legislation that will only worsen the challenges facing our communities.

As we honor our mothers, we must also recognize that too many are being failed by a system that should protect them.
