I understand the difficulty many Members may have with the prospect of same-sex marriages, and so I understand why the vote completed just a few minutes ago was so tough for many Senators. But this one shouldn't be. Those of us who support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act have a simple plea--let's end discrimination in the work-place. We can't forget, Mr. President, that we are a nation made prosperous and strong by the labor of millions of American workers. And each American worker--whether they build houses, pave roads, serve meals in country diners, or manage corporations--deserves to be judged by their dedication to their job and the quality of their work. It is indefensible, that in a great country like ours men and women can lose their jobs, be passed over for promotions, or suffer harassment because they have--or are perceived to have--a different sexual orientation than the rest of us. And for their part, American businesses deserve a work force which embodies maximum talent and minimal prejudice and dissention. Surely ending discrimination will improve productivity and enhance employee satisfaction.
