“on behalf of all parents and grandparents, teachers, clergy, mentors, agents of law enforcement, treatment and prevention professionals, and all the others who work every day to prevent illegal drug use from destroying the lives of our young people, I rise to support the nomination of John Walters, the President's nominee to be our nation's next Drug Czar. The confirmation of this important nominee is long overdue. Mr. Walters' nomination has languished in the Senate for almost six months, but with his confirmation, the President's cabinet will finally be complete. Mr. Walters will begin his tenure as Drug Czar at a very precarious time, but I know he is the right person for this challenge. He will need to work closely with law enforcement, intelligence, and military authorities to prevent drugs from being trafficked into America from abroad and to prevent the manufacturing and sale of drugs for the purpose of funding terrorist activities. Mr. Walters is eminently qualified to carry out this task, and, as I have previously stated, I am confident that he will be a first-rate Director.”
