“As my colleague knows, I had to stand up to some in my own caucus. Not many. There were some, one or two, who wanted to filibuster President Clinton's nominees. As the Senator will recall, I stood up to that and said we are not going to filibuster judicial nominees. It is not right, and I believe it is constitutionally unsound. Some of the outside groups were sincere but they wanted to--I believed them to be sincere but wrong--distort some of these matters, and I refused to allow them to do it. They demanded to testify in a variety of cases, and I told them no, we are not going to denigrate the judicial process with that type of stuff.”
