“I believe it is helpful to have trial experience, especially when you are going to be a trial judge. I do not think it is absolutely essential, however. I also believe some of the greatest judges we have had, on the trial bench, the appellate bench, and on the Supreme Court, never stepped a day into a courtroom other than to be sworn into law to practice.”
