We have a situation in America where we cannot take care of, or we refuse to take care of, a large part of the population of our children. We refuse to take care of it, even though the gross national product is quite healthy, the profits are booming on Wall Street, we have an unprecedented period of prosperity, no recessions for a long time, and yet we are refusing to take the necessary steps to take care of the health needs of the children of America. We have already dropped any discussion of a universal health plan. That is off the board completely. Beyond the children, there are 40 million Americans who are not covered, and that number is increasing all the time. We are not even discussing it. This is an era where those who have the most are in charge.
