“The earned-income tax credit will not be taken away from people who are illegally in the country today if my amendment is passed. The earned-income tax credit is a credit given to working individuals who have lower incomes to encourage people to work. That is what it is all about. It is for Americans and people legally here. So what I propose is that we do not provide this, on average, almost $2,000-per-year paycheck from the U.S. Government, to people who came into the country illegally and were given this probationary card status through their Z card status. I am not offering an amendment to take the earned-income tax credit away after they become legal permanent residents. So if they become a legal permanent resident, they would be entitled to have the earned-income tax credit.”
