“I join with Senator McCain in support of Senator Cornyn's amendment. Taiwan has been a strong ally of the United States. Senator McCain said we would provide them military aircraft, but, in truth, they would buy it. They are our allies. They are friends. They are prepared to purchase from an American company legitimate military equipment that they could use to help maintain the freedom they have cherished on the island, and it is hard for me to understand how that would be objected to. I just wish to say, as someone who has looked at these issues for some time as a member of the Armed Services Committee, I do believe Senator Cornyn--also a member of that committee--is correct, and I strongly support the amendment and urge my colleagues to vote for it, if and when we can get a vote.
