“once again, the House appears to be in an all-tax-cuts-all-the-time mode all over again. By listening to the talk coming from this body, one would want to believe that we really want tax fairness for all Americans. Last week we had the opportunity to amend a part of the Tax Code which unfairly penalizes residents of States with no local or State income tax, and we did not. Unfortunately, we did not get it right last week, but luckily we have another chance to fix the problem today. I hope that my colleagues will support allowing sales-tax deductibility for residents of States with no sales or State or local income taxes so that the hard-working residents, like people in my State of Texas and many others, get the same benefits given to almost all other Americans. Should we not be looking for ways to create equity and fairness for all of our citizens and not always seemingly helping just a few? Let us pass this sales-tax deductibility amendment and take a true step toward equity.”
