“Mr. Speaker, it has come to my attention that the bill as written by the Senate that we are discussing today would further encroach upon the rights of the States to set their own laws and policies with respect to homestead. While I would like to go much further than what is in the House bill, in fact I would prefer a complete elimination of the homestead provisions, because I think they really are not to the point of what the bill is trying to address, I am eager to learn what the House position may be with respect to the Senate language. I would just tell the gentleman, from this Member's perspective as one who did vote for the bill when it came out of the House, if it includes the language that is in the Senate bill, I will find it next to impossible if not impossible to support a conference report or to override a potential veto of the President as has been mentioned.”
