John Cornyn is a United States Senator from Texas, serving since January 3, 2002. A member of the Republican Party, he has held various leadership positions within the Senate, including serving as the Senate Minority Whip. I think what concerns me the most is that actually I think the decision was not fully vetted and thought out in terms of what the potential consequences would be.
And you said that if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is acquitted, he will not be released. What if a Federal judge orders the Department of Justice to release him? Will you defy that order?
I believe the Supreme Court has held that you cannot indefinitely detain somebody under the Zadvydas case.
Well, in terms of local security arrangements, I mean, this case might be tried in Connecticut or Vermont or some other part of the Second Circuit.
Your decision to try some of these 9/11 co-conspirators in an Article III court is not compelled by any law. It was a matter of your judgment and discretion.
You recognize the Supreme Court has said you cannot hold somebody indefinitely, for example, who cannot be repatriated to their home country.
A government-run single-payer system... would drive insurers out of the market and limit competition.
I would like to work with you to try to figure out how we can change the paradigm to one that will actually work, because I am not sure we will ever have enough good guys to outnumber the bad guys in this area.
I would like to express my appreciation to the witnesses for being here today, and thank you for serving your country in your capacities that you are holding now.
I have to confess, though, that the bad guys outnumber the good guys, and I agree with Attorney General Holder that the lack of resources is a real problem.
