The tragic killing of Kathryn Steinle at the hands of a five-time deported illegal alien and a seven-time convicted felon should never have happened. But that is exactly what happens when a city ignores immigration laws. The consequences of government-sanctioned lawlessness are real, and this is another in a long line of tragic wake-up calls that cry out for deporting criminal aliens. Ms. Steinle's killer, a wanted criminal illegal alien, had been in custody but then was put back on the streets by San Francisco officials. The Obama administration shares blame because they have done nothing to combat sanctuary city policies. Instead, they have encouraged them. We swore an oath to protect the American people from enemies, foreign and domestic. This Congress should take action to combat sanctuary city policies and make sure that criminal aliens are deported. I rise in strong support of legislation that I have cosponsored that would do just that, because it is time to put the safety of American citizens first. ____________________
