“Democrats, I believe, do want to preserve Social Security. So do Republicans. There is no difference. We both want to preserve Social Security. The difference is that for 40 years of Democrat control, they ran a deficit. They spent more at the Federal level than we took in, mounting up a debt on which we had to pay interest and, of course, we could not use that money for Social Security or anything else. So if they had remained in control and continued 40 years of history, of spending more than they were taking in, the only solution to Social Security would have been to raise taxes. Thankfully Republicans gained control of the legislative branch 3 rac{1}{2} years ago, and thanks to our fiscal policies getting government spending under control, we are now running a surplus. We are bringing more money into the Federal Government than we are spending for the first time in 30 something years.”
