Typically, in the United States an individual company will set prices in such a way to cover research. They will look at supply, demand, and the efficacy and efficiency with which the goal of cure or prevention is carried out. In order for the prices of medicine to be sustained over time, you must allow some recoupment of that investment in research. We all know that, on average, only 3 out of 10 medicines that are eventually approved in this country actually generate enough revenue to pay for that investment over time in the United States.
