“my amendment fully funds the Department of Education's share of the Interagency Education Research Initiative, IERI, which is a collaborative joint research and development education effort between the Department of Education and the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Quality education depends on quality research. We need to know the answers, if our goal is accountability and student achievement, on what works and what does not work. As we all know, advances in education, as in other fields, depend on knowing what works and what doesn't. If you look at our past investments in research in the field of education, pre-K through 12, our efforts have been woefully inadequate in terms of dollars and in the quality of the research that has been produced in the past. This is a joint collaborative effort, where we link three agencies together and demand accountability, credibility, good science, and the exactness of science in determining what works and what does not work. The primary objective of this joint program is to support the research and development and the wide dissemination of research-proven educational strategies that improve student achievement from pre-K all the way through 12 in the key areas of reading, mathematics, and science. I urge my colleagues to support this very worthwhile investment in our children's education.”
