Frist said "today I have the pleasure of announcing that the Senator from South Carolina, Mr. DeMint, is the latest recipient of the Senate's Golden Gavel Award, having completed 100 hours of presiding over the Senate at 2:15 this afternoon. The Golden Gavel Award has long served as a symbol of appreciation for the time that Senators contribute to presiding over the Senate--a privileged and important duty. Since the 1960s, Senators who preside for 100 hours have been recognized with this coveted award. Most Members recognize that sitting in that chair is the best way to learn Senate procedure, and Senator DeMint has done so with excellence, especially on those late nights when we were in dire need of help for the Chair. On behalf of the Senate, I extend our sincere appreciation to Senator DeMint for presiding during the 109th Congress. ___________________
