These well articulated words embodies the core meaning of what Memorial Day symbolizes. If it was not for those individuals who banded together, many of us would not have the freedoms we enjoy today. Citizens of Tennessee, the Volunteer State, have a long, storied history of military service to our country. Many of its young have sacrificed themselves in the name of liberty, freedom, and patriotism. On courthouses and city halls across Tennessee, stone or bronze monuments list the names of the men and women who gave their life for this country. It is fitting that tribute be perpetually acknowledged to their ultimate sacrifice. We must never lose touch with our traditions and history. Memorial Day is more than a three-day holiday weekend. It's about reconnecting with our past and being thankful for the freedom we all have today. We all must share in the loss of those brave patriots who have come and gone.”
