Political Quotes

I come tonight to talk about debt. That seems to be the topic of the day, and I have got to tell my colleagues, I watched the previous hour and I was thinking all of the time I was watching that these are the same folks that last year touted the tax plan as presented and now tonight say, oh, no, it is terrible because it was not permanent. We were criticized last year, but let me talk about what is happening in this country. My colleagues are seeing a group, a minority within a minority really, the Blue Dog Democrats, my colleagues are seeing a group emerge from all of the rhetoric here in this town, partisan rhetoric. They are seeing a group emerge that has some credibility on the debt. What was missing and what is missing and what will be missing on Thursday morning when we talk about making the tax cut bill that the House passed last year and the Senate passed last year permanent, what they do not say is that we have right now in, and the citizens of this country right now last year paid $360 billion in interest on a revenue total of $1.991 trillion. This comes out of a CBO publication of March of this year. That is an 18 percent mortgage on this country.
