Too many people could not afford the basic human needs of food and shelter, and even some died homeless on the streets, far more than we see today. The creation of Social Security is one of the landmark achievements, as I have said, of the 20th century. Together, we declared that seniors should not be forced to live in Third World poverty here in America.”
