“I don't support this bill, and I didn't ask for any earmarks, and I know the Senator from Missouri did not ask for any earmarks. I think there have been a lot of frayed feelings, no question. I think we all know that even at the levels--and I would say that I think the appropriators did agree to a number that was passed out here on the floor. But I think we know that even at those levels, spending is higher than it should be. What I would ask is that the Senator from Missouri and I continue to work together. I know we have an amendment that was going to be a part of whatever passed to really cap spending and drive it down to the appropriate level of spending relative to our gross domestic product. I know it is going to take both sides of the aisle to do that. I know we have had a deficit reduction commission that has just reported and has done some great work. The Senator from Illinois, to his credit, courageously supported that.”
