Mr. President, I reserve the right to object and say, as is the Senator from New York, the Senator from Illinois is most eloquent, and I always enjoy listening to his comments. I agree with him that many attributes regarding the senior Senator from Tennessee are all true--and many more, I might add. He is a multitalented person. But I say the President's commission on deficit reduction actually is addressing this issue. And they have actually made many bold steps in trying to address the many deficit issues, the tax expenditure issues which cause our country, in many cases, not to be as competitive as we could be around the world. So knowing that it is imminent, that this group is meeting on Friday, I object. I would like to say for the C-SPAN watchers that there is not really much happening on the floor right now that matters. I would agree with the Senator from Tennessee, the senior Senator, that there is a great negotiation that is taking place, and I applaud the President for bringing members of both parties together. I think there is a lot of activity. I just came in from the hallway. I know one of our negotiators was rushing to a meeting. I know that in a meeting about an hour ago, he had to step out because the President had called regarding this very issue we are talking about regarding taxes, regarding keeping the government operating. So I think there is work taking place in the Senate.…
