Mr. Speaker, today I enjoy a privilege that can only be dreamed of by millions around the world. That privilege is freedom: My freedom to express myself as I choose. My freedom to openly believe in God and to serve Him according to the dictates of my faith. Yet it is a tragic reality that millions around the world are denied this fundamental right. The United States has rightly affirmed the U.N. Declaration of 1981 stating that "Discrimination between human beings on grounds of religion or belief constitutes an affront to human dignity * * * and shall be condemned as a violation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights." We have justly condemned human rights abuses against Tibetan Buddhists, Bosnian Muslims, Soviet Jews, and others. Yet there are many, many more whose cries we must also hear. For too long, we have shut them out, perhaps because of ignorance. We can do so no longer. These are the cries of millions of Christians in countries across the world who are harassed, tortured, raped, imprisoned, or even executed for exercising the freedoms we in America so easily enjoy.
