It is really an honor to be able to honor tonight our Nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Malcolm X once declared that education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. For over 150 years, Historically Black Colleges have provided these passports to their students. Although many African American scholars and leaders of the 19th and early 20th century disagreed about how African Americans would attain freedom and equality promised in our Constitution, they agreed, however, that educating young men and women was the most important step in succeeding in life. Historically Black Colleges and Universities, also known as HBCUs, have always offered African American young men and women a quality, affordable education at times when access to institutions of higher learning were limited or completely closed off to African Americans.
