The many distressing accidents which have of late occurred in that portion of our navigation carried on by the use of steam power deserve the immediate and unremitting attention of the constituted authorities of the country

To be instrumental in terminating the evils of civil war and in substituting in their stead the blessings of peace is a divine privilege.
I herewith transmit to the Senate a report of the Postmaster-General, on the subject of the claims of Messrs. Stockton and Stokes, with a review of that report by the Solicitor of the Treasury, to whom, under a law of the last session of Congress, all the suspended debts of those contractors had been submitted;
To the Senate and House of Representatives: I transmit herewith certain papers from the War Department, relative to the improvement of Brunswick Harbor, Georgia.
The Government of the United States is ever anxious to cultivate peace and friendship with all nations; but it proceeds on the principle that all nations have the right to alter, amend, or change their own government as the sovereign power--the people--may direct.
