John Thune: I want to again compliment the gentleman for the extraordinary work he has done to draw attention to the need to be debt…

On the recordMarch 10, 1998
I want to again compliment the gentleman for the extraordinary work he has done to draw attention to the need to be debt free as we move into a new century and to do something that is very positive for our children, for our grandchildren, in the legislation he has introduced which would put us on a systematic plan to where we will eliminate the $5.5 trillion debt that soaks up more and more of our tax dollars every year just in interest payments. The plan that he has introduced would in 2026 completely eliminate the $5.5 trillion debt and put us as a country on a path toward being debt free. That is something that is absolutely historic in terms of what we can do for the future of this country.
