I first got to know Bob Dole well 18 years ago when I went on the Finance Committee and he was the senior Republican on the Finance Committee. During those early years on the Finance Committee, I was struck by several characteristics of Bob Dole. First of all, he is very bright. Not only did he know the intricacies of the Tax Code, but when different matters would come up, it was obvious he was a quick learner. Second, the characteristic that struck me was his seemingly inexhaustible energy. Bob Dole had the capacity to stand here always looking fresh and fit, everybody else looking a little bit bedraggled as we would go late into the night, accepting amendments, rejecting those, calling for votes, tabling this, and moving on in totally admirable fashion.
