The wisdom of the United States original sponsorship of Israel has been vindicated many times in many ways, by the sturdiness and vitality of Israeli democracy as well as by the richness of Israeli artistic and intellectual life. As a culture, a society and a polity--as hospitable if sometimes overheated environment for the thriving of Western values-- Israel has been a credit to itself and to its American benefactors. In reading some of the material that we have all had a chance to look at these past days, one finds real sympathy, empathy for Israel, and it certainly denies the canard that there are any anti-Semitic feelings in Mr. Talbott.
