“few Americans realize that it can cost between $8,000 and $30,000 to adopt a child nowadays. That is a problem we should also be addressing. But until we do, American couples need help. Too many loving families say no to adoption because they cannot afford it. Others have to take out a second mortgage. They should not have to do that. The Hope for Children Act will extend and increase the adoption tax credit for families who adopt. This is more than a good idea, it is a necessary measure. I want to thank the gentleman from South Carolina (Mr DeMint), my friend, for taking the lead on this measure. I think we should also thank our former colleague, Tom Bliley, who worked so hard to advance this legislation for so many years. Mr. Speaker, every child deserves a loving home, but we need to help adopting families overcome the financial impediments to taking a child into their home. This is a good bill. I urge all of my colleagues to vote for it.”
